[solved... my own fault] Gnome 3.26 cannot lock screen

Strangest thing, was working fine when I first switched to testing, go to sleep and in the morning go to open the laptop... not prompted to unlock the screen.

Tried restarting, still have no ability to lock the screen (log shows that screen locking timed out), the lock button is gone from the panel menu and the lock screen settings in gnome-settings is completely grayed out despite showing that it's on.

Any ideas on how to figure out what's going on?  Already tried reinstalling gnome and rebooting, no luck.

I've got this in my log tho, looks like it might be related.

[system] Rejected send message, 0 matched rules; type="error", sender=":1.1" (uid=0 pid=473 comm="/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-logind ") interface="(unset)" member="(unset)" error name="org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod" requested_reply="0" destination=":1.64" (uid=1000 pid=1255 comm="/usr/lib/xorg-server/Xorg vt2 -displayfd 3 -auth /")

Solved it.  The lock screen was disabled in

org.gnome.desktop.lockdown disable-lock-screen

I assume this happened when i was messing around with some phoronix-test-suite.
