touchpad middle button not working correctly on ThinkPad T470p

What I do: press down the middle button and move either with trackpoint or touchpad movement, then release all

What I'm expecting: button 2 down, mouse moves, button 2 up

What I get: (from xev) movements? then button 2 down and up? with trackpoint it scrolls.

What I want to archieve:

1. guesture with firefox. firefox has a bug with right button guesture so I switch to middle button. but I find it doesn't work any more with my touchpad
2. move canvas, e.g. in gimp or inkscape or the like.

I don't need to scroll with middle button and trackpoint. I scroll with my fingers move on the touchpad. I want the old, useful method because it has no replacement (?) without a mouse.

I'm on up-to-date Arch, with Xorg & lightdm & awesome wm 3.5.9 & linux 4.12.4.
