I just started using the -beyond kernel, and as soon as vesafb-tng gets loaded, my screen goes black. The system stil responds and everything, but there's no visual output *at all* on the command line - I have to start X to get anything. I don't even have a VGA line in my menu.lst file, but putting one in there doesn't help either. How do I disable vesafb-tng and get my console back?! :shock:

add the option fadein to your splash= option.
eg
splash=silent,fadein,theme:darch

Also, you wouldn't have a vga line for vesa-tng. The line would be video=vesafb:1024x768-32@60 or something similar. That is, unless something has changed that I'm on familiar with.

Thanks, I'll see how that works.
(BTW, I'm using initcpio instead of initramfs... Will that make a difference? And I don't have the bootsplash stuff installed...)

Nope, that doesn't help. Is there a way to just disable this bootsplash and vesafb stuff?

Do you have an ATI X700 graphic card?
A friend of mine had a similar problem. He had to switch back to the normal vesafb......

No, I have VIA Unichrome... Still, how did he go about switching back? Did he have to recompile the kernel?

you're using initcpio... have you configured it for gensplash? no.

Ah... Thanks. Any way to just turn gensplash off?

try
splash=off
in kernel line
:: create while you can ::

just dont pass the gensplash options and splash will go off.
if you want vesafb to be turned off, video=vesafb:off
