Gnome not logging in when HDMI disconnected

Hey Guys,

I have a new laptop (Gigabyte Aero 15) with a clean Arch Install. I use GDM with Gnome DE. I also have Nouveau drivers installed. Whenever I try to sign into Gnome with the HDMI disconnected I get

INFO: task Xorg.wrap:1222 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

When the HDMI is plugged in everything works 100%. Is there anyway to force HDMI output even when no HDMI is plugged in? Or are there another solution for this?

What graphics card do you have?  Also, are you running Gnome under wayland or xorg?

I have a GTX 1060 and running under Wayland but Xorg gives the same problem.

A complete Xorg log would be nice, this one lacks a lot of the initial info. I suspect that when you connect HDMI some output is connected to the Nvidia card, and nouveau doesn't try to suspend it to preserve power, yet it keels over when it wants to suspend the card because HDMI isn't connected. I'd suggest you go with some more generic method to disable (or use) the GTX card and use the nvidia driver. Follow [1] if you want to preserve power and only run on the intel card unless you want to use a specific application or follow [2] if you don't care about power saving and want to make full use of the dedicated GPU.

If you do want to stay with nouveau, you could also try and disable it's suspension features by adding

nouveau.runpm=0

to your kernel parameters.

Obviously, the last two options come at a cost for battery life.

Unfortunately the Nvidia card is needed as the HDMI is connected to the Nvidia card. I've tried Bumblebee with intel-virtual-output but I always get some kind of performance issues on the external screen.
