High temperature issue

My laptop is getting hot after booting. Then i checked cpu frequency speed. I found that my cpu is running constantly in max performance.
I have tried tlp. Didn't work. Then i tried to scale cpu frequency. But because of intel_pstate i only have "High Performance" and "Powersave" Governor. Switching power save mode didn't work. I have installed bumblebee, bbswitch. Nvidia gpu isn't running for sure. Then i put live ubuntu to see cpu speed. You can see that its in low speed. How can i fix the cpu speed and temperature issue in Arch?

Re: High temperature issue

Maybe command line top could say if a app (and what app) is using the CPU.

Because not all of us are native English speakers, try no to use slang or abbreviations, thank you.

Re: High temperature issue

Here's what my top command says. I think my cpu is running in full performance. Can't find anyway to keep the frequency low.

Re: High temperature issue

wild shot: "intel_iommu=off", also ensure to install and enable microcode updates.

Otherwise please provide a complete dmesg output.

Re: High temperature issue

This isn't a complete log, important bits from the start are missing. However what we can infer from what is there is that IOMMU currently is enabled, so try the suggested parameter or update the kernel to 4.13.5 in which case the default is off again anyway.

Also, looking at /proc/cpuinfo will not give you accurate readings, it doesn't contain the current cpu frequency anymore as of the 4.13 kernel series. I assume cpupower/turbostat have been updated, so use that to get readings on what your actual frequencies are.

Also 58 isn't *that* hot, laptops do tend to get hotter than their desktop counterparts. Are you actually sure with before after comparisons (try the LTS kernel for example) on average tempreadings that you aren't imagining this and are simply placeboing all over the place because you saw these frequency values (which again, are not synchronized to /proc/cpuinfo anymore, it will simply show raw "cpu description info" and not actual runtime information)

Another thing I'm seeing now: Make sure you set up Microcode updates. You say you have them installed, yet there's no indication that they have been set up correctly in that dmesg. Read that article again and refer to the section for your bootloader.

Re: High temperature issue

To echo V1del's sentiment, I got a brand new System 76 Oryx Pro with the i7-7700HQ processor and nVidia 1070GTX -- The fan would come on, go off, come on, etc. I was seeing temps between 50C-60C during normal work. I asked System76 support about the heat issue and they said it was completely normal. I idle at around 40C. They indicated the sme as V1del that these things run hotter.

I don't know what Ubuntu and Arch are different, though.
