No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

HW: HP Spectre x360-bl102nc
CPU: i7 8550U
GPU: GeForce MX150 - 01:00.0 - ID: 10de:1d10

I didn't install NVidia drivers until now because I was attempting a GPU Passthrough, but decided to scratch it, because nothing worked, even the package linux-vfio is broken now. ( I hope I didn't forget to undo some of the steps )

After installing nvidia-beta, nvidia-beta-utils and adding a minimal xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf (shown at the end)

Everything that Is commented out, I tried, but nothing changed, so just to be sure, I left commented.
This config works, but after uncommenting the driver line, I get no screens found. Which is fixed by uncommenting the BusID line, when something strange happens.

The best way to describe it is, xorg, along with i3 actually start, but I can't see anything, just the initial 'startx' output. I can open another tty, and in htop is see the usual stuff, i3, my background scripts, everything, I just get no output. I can get back to the frozen TTY1 by doing 'sudo pkill i3' - which shuts down the xorg server.

Logs, config files, etc:

Mkinitcpio config, I rebuilt the image manually after nvidia-beta install

$cat /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

# vim:set ft=sh
MODULES=""
BINARIES=""
FILES=""
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck"

Not using the linux-vfio anymore:

$uname -r

4.13.6-1-ARCH

GPU no longer getting passed the VFIO driver:

$cat /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf

#options vfio-pci ids=10de:1d10

Re: No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

Remove that Xorg.conf and follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … ing_nvidia You could ignore the xorg.conf configuration there as well since recent packages have automated that however it will not be harmful to configuration. The important bit are the xrandr lines to be added to your .xinitrc (or relevant configuration of the chosen display manager, as detailed on that page)

Re: No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

Thanks for the pointers, I probably overlooked that section smile
I got it working with the minimal config in the wiki, or with my full config (for anyone in the future):

$cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Section "Module"
  Load          "modesetting"
  Load          "glx"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

EndSection

Section "Device"

  Driver        "nvidia"
  BusID         "PCI:1:0:0"
  VendorName    "NVIDIA Corporation"
  BoardName     "GeForce MX150"
  Option        "Coolbits"            "28"
  Option        "RenderAccel"         "1"

  Option        "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  Identifier    "Screen0"
  Device        "Device0"
  Monitor       "Monitor0"
  Option        "RandRRotation"       "1"
  DefaultDepth  24

  SubSection    "Display"
    Depth       24
  EndSubSection
EndSection
$cat ~/.xinitrc

QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gtk2

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0;
xrandr --auto;
exec i3 &> /dev/null;

Re: No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

It's not relevant to this issue but your ~/.xinitrc is missing some vital sections which could cause problems...

Re: No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

It's not relevant to this issue but your ~/.xinitrc is missing some vital sections which could cause problems...

I'm not quite sure what you are talking about, unless you mean:

Arch Wiki wrote:

At the very least, ensure that the last if block in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is present in your .xinitrc file to ensure that the scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d are sourced.

In that case, I will add

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

But will ignore these, because they don't exist (except Xresources, but I do load that)

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

Final:

$cat ~/.xinitrc

QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=gtk2

xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0;
xrandr --auto;

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

exec i3 &> /dev/null;

If I'm not a bush, I'm not no one.

Re: No output or errors after enabling NVidia driver [SOLVED]

Yep, that's exactly what I meant smile

Without the scripts in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d your user session won't be correctly started, which can lead to all sorts of issues.
