[solved] iwlwifi crashes when trying to use 5GHz

I guess today we all rushed to upgrade our various systems, after the KRACK announcement :)
At least I did. I have a Dell laptop with Arch Linux, and a Mikrotik hAP AC router between me and my ISP. The laptop has had its wifi card replaced: it used to have an old Broadcom card without N or AC capabilities, I replaced it with an Intel card (that I scavenged from a stationary PC motherboard) that can use 802.11n.

This morning my router was running packages of version 6.40.1, and all was well.
I upgraded everything to 6.40.4, restarted the router, and then my networking stack on the laptop froze.
I tried to "netctl restart", and it froze too.
I tried to reboot, the boot log dumped a stack trace at me and refused to progress past the network loading stage.
I used a live USB to upgrade my Arch system, but it didn't help.
Then I finally went to google. I found a few bugs mentioning iwlwifi and "Microcode SW error detected.  Restarting 0x2000000" that I saw in the journalctl output. They mentioned trying to disable wifi's 5GHz band.
I went to my router settings, finally found where it is configured, and disabled 5GHz.
After that, my laptop booted successfully.

So. Could somebody please help me with reporting this to whoever can fix it? I have no idea who to contact and what information would be useful.

I'll go ahead and attach the kernel stack trace:

Re: [solved] iwlwifi crashes when trying to use 5GHz

4.12.14-1-ck-nehalem:  4.12 is EOL ck is not supported upstream ask graysky or ck for support or test on the linux package from the repo's.

Re: [solved] iwlwifi crashes when trying to use 5GHz

I see, thanks for the info! I'll try testing it with the official Arch kernel later.

Re: [solved] iwlwifi crashes when trying to use 5GHz

Installed 4.13.7-1-ARCH, everything works just fine.
For some reason the repo.db file of repo-ck only lists the 4.12 versions, although there are 4.13 packages on the server. Weird.
Marking this thread as solved.

Re: [solved] iwlwifi crashes when trying to use 5GHz

Maybe linux-ck hasn't been published yet since there were some problems with the first release that seem to be solved now by disabling bfq. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-ck/

Please don't use linux-ck-4.13.7-1 without disabling bfq on the kernel commandline. 4.13.7-2 should be fine, though.

Not weird, it's intended. The 4.13 packages aren't currently working for Graysky so haven't yet been added to the repo...

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Setting elevator to a valid value or scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=0 allows linux-ck-4.13.7-1 to function.
It is not bfq that is the issue although the patch CK applied tries to make bfq the default scheduler for ck that it just impossible with only .config changes,
the cause is mixing a none multiqeue mode queue with a multiqeue elevator bfq (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196695) the thread slithery referenced has more details.
