Nvidia 940MX Optimus "has fallen off the bus"

Hi,

I am an unfortunate user of Nvidia 940MX graphic card via the Optimus technology. Luckily, I use my integrated Intel graphic card for all the video stuff and want to use only the CUDA functionality of the Nvidia for Tensorflow. I have installed the nvidia driver together with nvidia-utils, cuda, cudnn, and so on. However, when I insert the kernel module both the normal way

modprobe nvidia

or via the Nvidia-specific command

nvidia-modprobe

I receive the following error:

[ 216.213634] nvidia-nvlink: Nvlink Core is being initialized, major device number 242
[  216.469732] nvidia 0000:01:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0003)
[ 216.469837] NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 0000:01:00.0
NVRM: (PCI ID: 10de:134d) installed in this system has
NVRM: fallen off the bus and is not responding to commands.
[ 216.469883] nvidia: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -1
[ 216.469906] NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
[ 216.469907] NVRM: None of the NVIDIA graphics adapters were initialized!
[ 216.469994] nvidia-nvlink: Unregistered the Nvlink Core, major device number 242

I have read it may be due to using an unstable driver, or kernel, but I am currently using no testing packages. On some places, I have even read that this may be due to incomplete shutdown of Windows (I have a dual-boot UEFI system), but I have especially performed a complete shutdown of my Windows. The kernel I use is 3.14.3-1, and the nvidia-drivers version is 387.12-1.

P.S. The nouveau driver also fails to load properly, as I installed it for further testing. Also, the Nvidia video card works properly under Windows, so it should be an Linux-specific problem.

Re: Nvidia 940MX Optimus "has fallen off the bus"

Have you tried setting the kernel parameter rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=1? (See the ArchWiki page).

Re: Nvidia 940MX Optimus "has fallen off the bus"

The kernel I use is 3.14.3-1

Can you please elaborate on this? Why are you using a kernel from 2014?
