New version of ttf-hack looks bad in Gnome applications

I just upgraded hack from 2.020-2 -> 3.000-1, and I'm not really happy with how it's looking now. Here is how the old version used to look:

And this is the new version, where glyphs are much shorter vertically.

I'm using KDE Plasma. These screenshots are from (Gnome) Terminator. A while ago, I needed the xsettings workaround. However, after one freetype2 upgrade, fonts looked terrible, and turning off xsettings improved them considerably. Hence, I haven't used xsettings for a while. Nevertheless, I tested with it again, but found it didn't really help.

I also tested hintnone, hintmedium, and hintfull, but none looked much better. I'm presuming that the visual differences in the hack versions are due to some configuration change, so is there a way to make the new version look like the old version?
