Whenever I use the system settings application in KDE Plasma over the last few days, I get an error
KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/systemsettings5'
even though the application launches normally and seems to function as expected. (In fact, I see the error on quitting the application, but it may be that the error dialogue is just behind the application window.)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75492 reports the same problem for a range of applications. However, this is an old bug, long ago reported as fixed.
Even so, https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=75492#c23 in that thread suggested that the problem might lie in the desktop file rather than having anything to do with the reported executable itself. So I tried to check the systemsettings5.desktop file for problems. But I cannot find this file at all. /usr/share/applications includes systemsettings.desktop, but not systemsettings5.desktop.
Initially, I thought this was the problem. However, I am now getting the same error with other applications, such as Kile. kdeinit complains it cannot launch the binary, even though everything proceeds just fine. So I guess it is not the desktop file (or lack thereof) - or else it has taken a dislike to all desktop files, for some reason.

Fixed in systemsettings 5.11.2-2. The kile issue is unrelated.

Aha! That was quick. Thanks. Do you know what the Kile issue is or do you just mean 'whatever it is, it is something else'?

Sort of. You can work around it by removing the 'X-DBUS-StartupType=Multi' line from /usr/share/applications/org.kde.kile.desktop

I just updated, which included this bump, and rebooted. However, i still get the same error when using system settings.

I have this isue too; also after update.
I have and had this issue only, if I start systemsettings as application launcher in a panel or on the desktop. If I start systemsettings from menu everything is fine.

You have to delete the icon from the panel and re-add it.

Ah! Thank you - that did it. I should have thought of this, I guess, but I almost always open it from a panel, so it didn't occur to me to try anything different, I suppose.
