is the bytecode interpreter enabled in the freetype2 package?

Yes, in fact it seems to be enabled by default.

(If you want you can turn on the autohinter in /etc/fonts/local.conf or /etc/fonts/conf.d/.)

usually the bytecode interpreter isnt compiled in by default cause of patent restricitions or something like that..
