[SOLVED] Screen disabled at boot / waking up

Hello,

I've been using Arch on a dual monitor for a while now. I never had any issue past the initial setup.
But this weekend, I replaced an old monitor. That's when this problem arose.

Right now this is my setup:
- Primary monitor is a 27" panel, connected with a diplay port cable, placed on the right in landscape orientation.
- Secondary monitor is a 24" panel, connected with a DVI-D cable, placed on the left in portrait orientation.
- Both are plugged into a recent nvidia GPU, with the proprietary drivers installed.

The Xorg config was generated using the nvidia-settings app. I had done the same with my previous setup and it worked well, so I don't think that's where the problem is.

THE PROBLEM: Whenever I boot up the computer or wake it from suspension, the primary screen is disabled. I have to get back into nvidia-settings, enable it, configure it. Once it's done, it'll work perfectly fine until such a time that I shutdown or suspend again.

Here are Xorg's logs. I don't think they say anything helpful regarding my problem but someone more knowledgeable might disagree.

One last thing, although I'm fairly sure it's unrelated, my UEFI screen appears on the secondary screen.
But I believe this has more to do with the fact that BIOSes use a certain logic in deciding which video output to use and DVI-D might be picking up the priority.

Anyone having an idea what's happening here or, more importantly, what I can do to fix this ?

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Screen disabled at boot / waking up

I have solved my problem. I'll report on what I found, it might help someone else someday.

The critical piece of information that helped was found there:
https://superuser.com/questions/630555/ … ely#631691

TL;DR: Some feature of DisplayPort makes it so that whenever the monitor is turned off, it disconnects from the GPU. In turn, the GPU passes along the information that one of the monitors no longer exists, and everything adjusts in a cascading effect (the GPU driver, the X server, and anything that relies on those two).

In my case, I turn the monitor off when I suspended the computer. As for when I boot it up, the monitor goes through an off phase since during the BIOS sequence, it receives no output.

The suggested fix was to export the monitor EDIDs information, so that the autodetect feature is no longer required. I did exactly that by tinkering with my nvidia generated xorg.conf file which now looks like so:

The changes compared to what nvidia generated:
- Both monitors are declared. The generated conf only had the DVI one declared.
- Both monitors are referenced properly in the screen section. The monitor option of that section used to point to the DVI monitor.

Not having to autodetect the monitor bypasses the problem and the monitor just works (tm).

Thanks to anyone who has taken the time to read me, and possibly gave some thought to my problem.
