Upgrade problems

Hello,

I haven't done a pacman upgrade in a while, so when I did it was quite large. However, it halts on several points and I can't figure out why. First off, I get an error message that I can't understand saying:

pacman: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libalpm.so.7)

This also makes cower not work, but with a libcurl.so.6 error.Any ideas?

It also tries to upgrade filesystems, which refuses to upgrade since mtab exists in file system. When running the -Syu this is my output:

~ > pacman -Syu
pacman: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libalpm.so.7)

Trying to rename mtab to mtab.old does not work (obviously):

error: failed to commit transaction (unexpected error)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

How can I solve these problems?

Re: Upgrade problems

i think skunktrader was referring to this article. http://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyste … -required/

although i get perturbed when someone always says 'refer to the news on the home page' since users are likely going to be pulling this article for years to come, dont have any reference as to what to look for, and news is dynamic. The reason i am mentioned this here is because the user never replied back so may have been misled.

anyhow, i am having the same error, but its not related to forcing a filesystem upgrade.  its related to hard drive sector errors.   So whats this error really mean?

i cant uninstall kde-base,  nor reinstall it.  I get this error

pacman: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libalpm.so.4

i have file system errors, and have ran some system tools on the hard drive to flag the bad sectors dirty, and am now trying to repair.  I think i need a full reinstall, after reformatting the hard drive where when formatting it should ignore dirty-flagged sectors.  i think this is what i need. Of course what i really need is a new hard drive.

Thanks for that link!

I am an Arch newbie with the same error.
I tried to remove /etc/mtab which was not very wise :-)

After I found this thread, I did what was mentioned in that article:

pacman -S filesystem --force

I tried again to upgrade with

pacman -Syu

and got only one error:

failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
initscripts: /etc/profile.d/locale.sh exists in filesystem

After I renamed that file, I was able to upgrade successfully with

pacman -Syu

Thanks again!

Re: Upgrade problems

I had the same problem when trying to install gnome using `pacman -S gnome gnome-extra`. The error message was

failed to commit transaction (unexpected error)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

After running `pacman -Syu` and running the above command, there were no problems.

(PS: Sorry, I'm used to markdown in StackExchange but cannot find out how to format in Arch forum.)
