[FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

Hi, just did a normal update today after 5-6 days and linux was updated and so was nvidia drivers, after reboot i noticed flickering and when using terminal the one screen of two goes blank for a sec.

dmesg

[  116.266349] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

ls -l /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  323 Oct 31 06:30 10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1350 Oct 12 23:01 10-quirks.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  945 Sep 15 21:31 40-libinput.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1753 Nov 18  2016 70-synaptics.conf

I also tried booting with

 quiet intel_iommu=off i915.i915.enable_rc6=0

and combinations of them but no luck, it is either both pipe A and pipe B errors or one of them. When flickering dmesg -w prints this error depending on the screen A or B. Didn't have any luck searching for some hours now. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Edit: When the screen is flickering i noticed a weird output in the journal that wasnt there before

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

i915.i915.enable_rc6=0 is not a valid parameter descriptor.

Post a full untruncated dmesg, maybe there's some context we are missing.

That said, simply from the symptoms I'd go with PSR issues so you might want to try

i915.enable_psr=0

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

I have the same problem. The flicker always occurs when I reboot the system.
Besides, I have very frequent system freezes, with no response to even reisub. I have latest microcode installed. I'm able to have at least 2-3 FIFO underrun errors until getting a freeze. The problem didn't occur with kernel 4.9.60 (and probably 4.9.61)

Both issues occur even with `i915.enable_psr=0`.
The log using default kernel opts is here:

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

And for all intents and purposes, this sounds like a regression in the LTS kernel, have you tried reproducing on the standard kernel?

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

This bug was introduced in version 4.9.62. It's been reported in the bugtracker: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/56392

hi
It's "old" kernel bug. I reported it four months ago.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101868

Now, it's nearly the same with 4.9.63 lts arch kernel. Screen and virtual consoles  flickering. The only solution to stop it is a reboot.

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

I don't experience this with the latest non-lts kernel.

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

Unless someone can identify which of the commits from 4.9.62 caused the regression upstream can not revert it.

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

I've had

[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun

on latest linux (non-lts) a while ago. No hangs, though.

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

'[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun'
Same flickering  on linux-4.13.12-1, and  linux-lts 4.9.64-1. These kernels are unusable with i915 intel driver.
It was the same bug on Debian testing and sid.
Linux 4.9.x is the worth lts kernel I ever seen sad
I compiled and installed linux-lts-4.4.97-1 from Aur . Right now, it works for me.

You complain about 4.9y but are not contributing to resolve the issue.
bisect the kernel (make adjustments as needed for linux-lts vs linux)  locate the commit report it upstream then it can be addressed.
If you need help performing the bisection please document what steps you have performed so far.

Re: [FIXED] Intel i915 drm flickering after update

Me and other people  already send bug reports upstream.
The problem is the in sources, not in the packaging (Arch and Debian).

What makes you believe I am suggesting the issue was in packaging?  The next line from the quote you omitted.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/56392 the issue was present in 4.9.62-1 but not 4.9.61-1 so as was suggested bisecting would determine which commit so upstream could address it.
Are you suggesting that this bug is different?   The bug report is not accurate?   That bisecting would not locate the the issue between 4.9.61 and 4.9.62 or that information should be passed directly to linux-stable?
Edit:

$ git bisect start
$ git bisect good v4.9.61
$ git bisect bad v4.9.62
Bisecting: 43 revisions left to test after this (roughly 6 steps)
[c4d567ef164eefc7b5fbae1a634b160faee6cbf7] s390/qeth: fix retrieval of vipa and proxy-arp addresses

So a minimum of six steps plus two initial builds to ensure the local build is producing the expected results.  Maderios I would expect  the initial build to take slightly longer than the build you performed for linux-lts-4.4.97-1.
The subsequent builds should be much quicker.
Edit:
Can those affected confirm the if issue is fixed with linux-lts 4.9.66-1?

Yes, linux-lts works again on 4.9.66-1 and 4.9.67-1
