[SOLVED] Disable GTK3 Tooltips - Clean Or Dirty

useless-tooltips.th.png

In the past disabling tooltips in GTK3 was simple you would edit your settings.ini file with

gtk-enable-tooltips=0

since version 3.10 this setting has been deprecated.

GtkSettings:gtk-enable-tooltips has been deprecated since version 3.10 and should not be used in newly-written code.

This setting is ignored.

There was also an option

gtk-tooltip-timeout

this could be used to increse the time a tooltip takes to display. But this option was also deprecated.

GtkSettings:gtk-tooltip-timeout has been deprecated since version 3.10 and should not be used in newly-written code.

This setting is ignored.

As a workaround I have been building GTK3 from source and editing the file

gtk3/src/gtk+/gtk/gtktooltip.c

And changing the default hover time from

#define HOVER_TIMEOUT          500

To

#define HOVER_TIMEOUT          5000

This seems to work for some apps but not all and I'm looking for a way to fully disable tooltips. A clean way would be preferred but anything that would disable or if necessary a hack to break tooltips so they don't work. Really anyway clean or dirty to make tooltips not show up. I find them to be 90% not useful and just display useless information.

Here's gtktooltip.c maybe someone could see a way to break tooltips into not working.

/**
 * SECTION:gtktooltip
 * @Short_description: Add tips to your widgets
 * @Title: GtkTooltip
 *
 * Basic tooltips can be realized simply by using gtk_widget_set_tooltip_text()
 * or gtk_widget_set_tooltip_markup() without any explicit tooltip object.
 *
 * When you need a tooltip with a little more fancy contents, like adding an
 * image, or you want the tooltip to have different contents per #GtkTreeView
 * row or cell, you will have to do a little more work:
 *
 * - Set the #GtkWidget:has-tooltip property to %TRUE, this will make GTK+
 * monitor the widget for motion and related events which are needed to
 * determine when and where to show a tooltip.
 *
 * - Connect to the #GtkWidget::query-tooltip signal. This signal will be
 * emitted when a tooltip is supposed to be shown. One of the arguments passed
 * to the signal handler is a GtkTooltip object. This is the object that we
 * are about to display as a tooltip, and can be manipulated in your callback
 * using functions like gtk_tooltip_set_icon(). There are functions for setting
 * the tooltip’s markup, setting an image from a named icon, or even putting in
 *   a custom widget.
 *
 * Return %TRUE from your query-tooltip handler. This causes the tooltip to be
 * show. If you return %FALSE, it will not be shown.
 *
 * In the probably rare case where you want to have even more control over the
 * tooltip that is about to be shown, you can set your own #GtkWindow which
 * will be used as tooltip window. This works as follows:
 *
 * - Set #GtkWidget:has-tooltip and connect to #GtkWidget::query-tooltip as before.
 * Use gtk_widget_set_tooltip_window() to set a #GtkWindow created by you as
 *   tooltip window.
 *
 * - In the #GtkWidget::query-tooltip callback you can access your window using
 * gtk_widget_get_tooltip_window() and manipulate as you wish. The semantics of
 * the return value are exactly as before, return %TRUE to show the window,
 * %FALSE to not show it.

Re: [SOLVED] Disable GTK3 Tooltips - Clean Or Dirty

Using the setting

tooltip {
    opacity: 0;
}

Some application tooltips are hidden and other are not.

For example galculator and Libreoffice work and the tooltips are hidden.

But Firefox and Chromium (inox) don't work. I'm not sure why because they are dependant on GTK3 and I thought they would get their tooltip settings from GTK3?

And changing the default hover time from

#define HOVER_TIMEOUT          500

To

#define HOVER_TIMEOUT          5000

You'd also probably need to change BROWSE_TIMEOUT too.

You could, alternatively, remove / comment out the content of gtk_tooltip_show_tooltip on lines 1091 to 1167.

Note that firefox uses both gtk2 and gtk3 (which in itself is completely absurd, but take that up with Mozilla).

I'm not denying that it is ridiculous, but at the same time I very much doubt it is for the same reason you are thinking of. smile

Re: [SOLVED] Disable GTK3 Tooltips - Clean Or Dirty

I rebuilt from source and removed the content of gtk_tooltip_show_tooltip on lines 1091 to 1167.

Firefox still shows tooltips. As before works fine with galculator and Libreoffice.

Firefox seems to have a mind of it's own when tooltips are concerned. Not sure what to do?

Add the following to your userChrome.css file for Firefox. I just tested it and it works for me.

tooltip {
  visibility: hidden;
}

Re: [SOLVED] Disable GTK3 Tooltips - Clean Or Dirty

Getting somewhere. I cleaned up any mods I had done to GTK3 files. Reinstalled GTK3 clean, then made a new userChrome.css and added

tooltip {
  visibility: hidden;
}

Now the tooltip text has gone and the black tooltip background has gone but now its a transparent white background with no text?

white-box.th.png

justasug are you using GTK3 3.22.26-1?

Also what theme are you using?

Firefox does so in separate processes though for gtk3 and gtk2. WebKitgtk+ does the same. A separate process is spawned for flash plugin(gtk2) for example which opens /usr/lib/firefox/gtk2/libmozgtk.so. Neither /usr/lib/firefox/firefox nor /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container hardcode a gtk+ version. The decision is done at runtime. Libxul.so is of course linking against the gtk3 version of mozgtk directly.

Firefox still shows tooltips.

You mean in web content, or on firefox interface elements?  GTK is only relevant for program interface elements (windows, menus, program buttons, etc).  GTK is *not* used for the web content, and webpage tool tips (from the "title" attribute of web elements) are an entirely different issue.  Further there are web elements that look and act much like these but do not use the title attribute but rather some alternative css approach responding to the :hover pseudo-selector.  Short of modifying the web rendering engine to never apply the :hover selector you'd never be able to get rid of these entirely (and even doing this would have horrible side effects).  You can, on a case-by-case basis apply a user style css that will hide these web-based "tooltips" but there is not general solution.

That was never the question at hand... gtk2 is a hard dep because if you have flashplugin and no gtk2 then firefox apparently goes all bork.

Yes, I am using the latest GTK3 version from the repository. I'm using the Zukitre theme (from the Zuki-themes collection). I've also tested it on another computer with a composited desktop (using Compton) and it works properly. No transparent boxes with shadows or anything.

Re: [SOLVED] Disable GTK3 Tooltips - Clean Or Dirty

Thanks to everyone who posted and helped me figure this out.

Summary of fixes/workarounds.

The white box I was having issues with was caused by compton (composite manager) I have disabled it until I can tweak the setting and get them working together.

Firefox for gui elements (windows, menus, program buttons, etc)

about:config browser.chrome.toolbar_tips false

Firefox for web content (tooltips when hovering on web page links)

$ vi ~/.mozilla/firefox/PROFILENAME/chrome/userChrome.css

tooltip {
  visibility: hidden;
}

GTK3 applictions galculator and Libreoffice etc...

$ vi ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css

tooltip {
    opacity: 0;
}
