I have this little issue here that I don't know how to solve, which is basically a black screen flickering everytime I open or close a program
https://u.teknik.io/mzIBY.webm
My GPU is a rx470 and I'm using amdgpu driver.
I'm using compton in this vid but it happens even without a compositor.
Any idea how to troubleshoot this? Thanks.

From the video I'd say that's caused by compton's fade-out effect. Can't imagine how it looks without compositor.
Apart from that I'd suggest trying different window manager, as this is most likely WM related.
You should also further describe your setup, WM/DE used, Xorg/Wayland, etc.
Also, I believe this post would be more appropriate in "Applications & Desktop Environments"

Even without compositor I get this flickering.
I'm using a very basic i3 setup with xorg. Tested with wayland and I get the same flickering.

I'm not "helping" as far as offering a solution, but it appears that it's just the drawing speed of whatever machine/video card/driver/compositor you are using. It draws the black background of your machine before filling in the rest of the upper layer(s). Try not running the app full screen to see if that makes a difference. (I don't know anything about i3 so this may not be possible.) Finally, it's just a quarter-second cosmetic glitch. is it really that big of a deal? (This isn't a judgement call, just a question.)

So I've installed KDE to test things and I don't have this problem, so I guess is a compositor issue?

It's kinda annoying after a while.

The black frame will be i3's decorating parent window.
When closing the actual client, compton updates the pixmap for the handled window (mentioned parent) a final time ad continues to draw this.
Not sure whether you can fix that from compton or i3, but I guess you won't get this with openbox or fluxbox (and compton) either?

I tested with and without compton and I get this issue. It happens under wayland too.
However I don't have this flickering using GNOME, KDE or Budgie. So I don't know if it's a driver or compositor issue.
Should I try proprietary AMD drivers?

I said: try WITH compton, but WITHOUT i3 ...
