I am having trouble getting the sound to work through HDMI on my MacBook Pro mid-2013. Running
speaker-test -Dhdmi:NVidia,1 -c 2 -l 1
gives the expected result, but I don't get any sound from any jack-aware application. I have set the correct sound card in Cadence, I have long since removed PulseAudio (but maybe there are traces left of it on the system that are messing things up?).
The output of
aplay -L
is
null

Where would I start to figure out what the bug is?
Grateful for any help on this!

OK, so this is embarrasing... After a couple of weeks of troubleshooting I accidently stumbled on the solution: simply to reboot the machine while plugged into the HDMI cable. Hotswapping and audio is appearantly not playing well together yet. Guess I have to read up on udev rules...
