Hi,
i has problem after xorg upgrade,
now xorg starts about 1,5 minute and all time uses hard drive.
Where i should look for a problem?
log not showing any errors.
Offline
I've got the same kind of problem, though it does not last that long.
What is more annoying in my case, it's that using fluxbox the application 'gkrellm' (which is started whenever X is started) takes about 5 minutes before appearing.
Furthermore, there's no more background to fluxbox (no more bstebg nor fbsetbg commands).
Can't figure out the issue.
Offline
in my case, it was font-cache problem,
i found command, in forum and wiki, and problem has been solved

Does anybody know how to fix this problem. In my case startx also takes about 1.5 minute to start
this is my xorg.conf:

any ideas? I installed arch on this new laptop, did pacman -Syu, and afterwards pacman -S xorg. modular version. kernel 2.6.16.5
Offline
My guess is that you have to many fonts.
Arch - It's something refreshing
Offline
no thats not it. If I do not load the fonts, it is still starting up slowly
Offline
run this with root!!!
fc-cache -vf

also making your hostname resolvable is a good idea! i normally do this by putting a line like this in my /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 myhost
replace myhost whith wthat ever you set in /etc/rc.conf. this should speed up X.org starts when DNS is unavailable.
I recognize that while theory and practice are, in theory, the same, they are, in practice, different. -Mark Mitchell

well I would just like to address this issue again, since I stil have no luck in speeding the startup up...
I do not have many fonts, and the loopback device is ok. I suspect it to have something to do with these entries in Xorg.log:

pages and pages...
Does anybody know this? I run the latest openchrome drivers on a PN800 based chipset with a VT3118 chip (apparently). X is working only because I have added the line Option "VBE Modes" into xorg.conf.
Offline
Hmm... This is really weird, could it be a problem with the Openchrome driver perhaps? At any rate, what does 'ifconfig' print out?

If switching to the vesa driver helps, it's the openchrome driver, otherwise it's something else. Could it be that you have the localhost interface firewalled?
Offline
no switching to the vesa driver doesnt speed anything up. moreover it incredibly slows down any graphical app.
it is the same problem with the xf86-video-via, the unichrome driver, and the openchrome driver. I just get a whole bunch of "mode stuff" in the Xorg log (as can be seen in the earlier post) and I do not have a firewall on the loopback...
