Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Hello.

I am running Arch Linux 4.14.3-1 standard kernel on an Asus e200ha. It has a cherry trail cpu so playing sound trough jack is difficult to setup that's why I bought a usb to audio jack device.

First of I am still a bit confused on all the sound tools I need to install to play sound. Is it correct to say:

- alsa: Is the lowest tool in the sound system hierarchy, it speaks directly to the hardware driver?
- pulseaudio: speaks to alsa, it's api is more friendly that's why we use something above alsa?
- ffmpeg: speaks to pulseaudio and is needed for decoding / encoding?
- gstreamer: does the same as ffmpeg but also for video?

I have read the Arch wiki pages about this but I am still confused about the hierarchy and the real value of gstreamer is this chain.

NOTE: usb device is working 100% correctly tested on other laptops, headphones also working 100% correctly.

Next the problem I think I have is that pulseaudio does not know about my usb soundcard, I installed:

- gstreamer, gst-plugins-good
- pulseaudio, pulseaudio-alsa
- alsa-lib, alsa-utils, alsa-firmware, alsa-tools

lsusb (the usb sound card):

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Try to play something, then post during playback

aplay -l
amixer -c$insert correct index of usb device as given by aplay -l
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs

As for the relation question. The first two are correct on a high level view point (there are a few more in depth correlations, but mostly yes pulseaudio's API tends to be easier to use and ALSA provides the hardware drivers) gstreamer and ffmpeg are two different decoding/encoding libraries (they both handle video and audio) if one or the other is required depends on how the application you are using for playback  has been developed (most will either use gstreamer or ffmpeg as dependencies for playing back encoded formats, that decision is up to the dev of an application). An additional note, if the player you are using does indeed use gstreamer for handling encoded formats you will want to at least have gst-plugins-ugly and gst-plugins-bad installed, since these contain the codecs for a few widely used formats (notably mp3 is in the ugly category since the format used to be patent encumbered, however the next release will move them to good, since these patents have expired)

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

-ALSA is the driver, plus some user-space libraries and utilities to work with the driver.
-Pulseaudio isn't used because of "friendly API". It's a sound server, which allows you to do many things that aren't possible with pure ALSA setup, e.g. If you play audio trough usb-soundcard, and unplug the card, it can reroute the audio to the built in sound card on the fly.
-ffmpeg and gstreamer are mostly used for decoding compressed audio and/or video. Neither are needed for working audio setup. They should get installed as dependency by pacman if some application needs either to work.

When you're trying to get your sound card to work. It's usually better start with just ALSA, and no pulseaudio. Make sure you've unmuted your card, and use speaker-test for testing: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … e_channels

sevaho wrote:

NOTE: usb device is working 100% correctly tested on other laptops, headphones also working 100% correctly.

Did you test it on other linux systems, to make sure it is supported by linux/ALSA? You could also check whether the card is listed in ALSA sound card matrix.

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Yes OOO,

I tested it on a Lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon 2017 model usb sound card works as it should. Also tested it on my desktop. Both running Arch stable and stock kernels.

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Why is your pulse not starting? How do you login, how do you start X? What does

loginctl show-session $XDG_SESSION_ID
systemctl --user status pulseaudio

output?

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Your pulse can't start properly and is killed by something, is a hostname set? What does

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
dmesg

give?

Re: Unable to play sound trough usb sound card.

Sevaho, clearly, alsa is recognizing the card. And according to the results from pulseaudio -v that you pasted above, pulseaudio is looking for the relevant config files in /usr/share/alsa/ucm/ and some of its subfolders. It cannot find them. Are they actually there? Or are they elsewhere such as in /usr/share/alsa/cards/?
