[solved] laptop's screen no longer going into power save/black

I have an old Dell laptop running arch (4.14.4-1-ck-nehalem). I save memory by not running X. The screen used to go black after not using it for a few minutes. Recently, after an update, the screen no longer goes to black. What may have happened to the power saving settings? How to fix?

Update: as of kernel 4.12 the timer that "blanks" the screen is set to 0, infinite.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

I ended up reverting back to the LTS kernel.
