Suddenly can't xset +fp to a dir with symlinked font files?

The subject pretty much says it all - this is with xorg 1.19.5 and xset 1.2.3, fontconfig-infinality 2.12.1-2 (infinality-bundle).

Is anyone experiencing anything similar? Resolving the symlinks via the cp command makes things work. Please tell me this isn't a "security" fix...

Arch Linux obviously, and just ran pacman -Syu before posting this.

UPDATE: actually not just the one machine, it's happening everywhere after an X server restart.
