Programs start slowly when started from Rofi

I'm using i3 and when I start a program through Rofi it takes noticeably longer than when I start it from the terminal.  Is that just a consequence of using Rofi to launch programs or is something weird going on with my configuration?

In my i3 config, I launch Rofi with

bindsym $mod+d exec rofi -show run

Does Rofi itself launches swiftly?
