My layout toggle split is not working.
e.g.:
I open 2 Terminal in stacked or tabbed mode.
Then I press $mod+e nothing happens. Stacked and tabbed mode are working as usual.
The only way is, when I restart i3 inplace with $mod+Shift+r. Then I am able to use layout split toggle.
But if I close all windows, then again it's not working.
Does somebody has the same problem or knows a solution?
$ uname -a
Linux Arch-Desktop 4.14.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Dec 14 21:26:16 UTC 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ i3 --version
i3 version 4.14.1 (2017-09-24) © 2009 Michael Stapelberg and contributors
I found this issue, which is already closed.
https://github.com/i3/i3/issues/2846
But after I enable stacked/tabbed layout, it's still not working. So I think my problem is different, than the one described in the issue.

I'm having the same problem.
Update:
I just noticed that if I hit either mod+v or mod+h *before* I try to enter split screen it works. E.g.:
If I use these steps it won't work:
* Open new empty workspace.
* Open new terminal window there.
* Hit mod+e to enter split screen --> Not working.
If I use these steps it works:
* Open new empty workspace.
* Open new terminal window there.
* Hit mod+v or mod+h.
* Hit mod+e to enter split screen --> Works.
Maybe it'll work in both cases if you set a default split behaviour or something?

As it is clearly mentioned on the bug, this has been fixed already. If it isn't in the stable release yet, then you can use i3-git in the meanwhile: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/i3-git/

I think the fix (#2849) was merged in 4.14.1. I'm running 4.14.1.

As x33a already said, if you use i3-git then toggle split works fine.

I'm using i3-git until i3-wm gets a new release.
feluxe : Does it also works for you with i3-git?
I will mark this thread as solved, when feluxe confirms that it also works for him.
EDIT 2018-01-08:
I will mark this thread as solved.
