[SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

I dual boot w10 & Arch on Lenovo Yoga 920. My network in Arch is managed by systemd-networkd and I have an issue with wired network. Arch is up to date with vanilla kernel.
The laptop do not have a plug for RJ 45 cable. I use this USB-C dock to plug the cable. Unfortunately, the interface is not recognized.

$ ip a

and

$ ls /sys/class/net

both return only lo and wlp1s0, the last one being my wireless interface.
I created a /etc/systemd/network/10-ethusb0.link file as described in wiki to rename the interface ethusb0 with the MAC address.

I have no idea how to proceed to use wired internet with this USB-C dock. Thank you for help.

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

Does it work with the vanilla kernel? Or -lts?

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

The kernel I use is the vanilla one, and not custom as previously written. Sorry for this error due to poor english. (op has been modified accordingly)

What does lsusb and dmesg show when you plug it in?

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

What gets posted to the journal when after you plug in the device?

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

It is showing up as a HID device and as a storage device.  Presumably to install drivers to your Windows machine wink
I think you are going to need to play with usb_modeswitch

ewaller@turing ~/devel/python 1019 %pacman -Ss modeswitch

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

I installed usb_modeswitch. With no configuration at all neither any command, I can remark that pluggin the USB-C dock will add more usb entries than before when running lsusb. For example, device 013 ( Silicon Motion, Inc.) is an usb key which was not listed before when plugged.

$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 009: ID 058f:8468 Alcor Micro Corp.
Bus 002 Device 010: ID 0bda:8153 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8153 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
Bus 002 Device 008: ID 0bda:0411 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 002 Device 007: ID 2109:0813 VIA Labs, Inc.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0cf3:e300 Qualcomm Atheros Communications
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c52f Logitech, Inc. Unifying Receiver
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 138a:0094 Validity Sensors, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 013: ID 090c:1000 Silicon Motion, Inc. - Taiwan (formerly Feiya Technology Corp.) Flash Drive
Bus 001 Device 012: ID 0bda:5411 Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
Bus 001 Device 014: ID 2109:0101 VIA Labs, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 011: ID 2109:2813 VIA Labs, Inc.
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 04f2:b5a4 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

But I still can't see my interface when running $ip a, and now an USB key will no more automount when plugged! I will learn how to use usb_modeswitch (if I have anything to do) and be back when my issue is solved.

Re: [SOLVED]USB 3 ethernet adapter not detected

I installed usb_modeswitch and didn't configure anything. The app works right of the box.

When plugging the USB-C mini dock with the RJ 45 cable, the interface appeared:

$ ip a
....
3: enp0s20f0u6u2u1: <BROADCAST, ....> .....
$ ls /sys/class/net
enp0s20f0u6u2u1@ lo@ wlp1s0@

This package is thus needed when using USB dock.
