I'm running GNOME and PulseAudio on laptop Acer TravelMate (TMP648-MG-554H). This laptop has two audio interfaces - a combo jack (a TRRS 3.5mm jack) that combines both stereo output and mono input, and an HDMI port (that provides output only). I experience the following three problems that I suspect may be related (but my suspicion can of course be wrong). In all of these problems I refer to the state I can see in the ``pavucontrol`` program.
When I have an external display plugged in the HDMI port and it (and the built-in display as well) goes blank due to a time of inactivity and is then woken up again, the "Profile" (in the "Configuration" tab) for the Built-in Audio (the only device) is set to "Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output + Analog Stereo Input" and I have to manually choose "Analog Stereo Duplex" which was selected before the displays went blank. The switch apparently happens when the displays are being woken up as I hear a small "click" sound coming from my loudspeakers. However, this behavior is in place only sometimes (some startups - it does not start happening while the computer is up). Other times it works as it should, keeping the selected profile in place even after going blank and being woken up again.
The combo jack being plugged in is not detected - in the "Output Devices" tab the Port is always set to "Speakers" no matter whether the jack is plugged in or not. I have to manually select "Headphones (unplugged)" to get sound going to the connected loudspeakers or headphones. When the jack is plugged in and "Speakers" is selected, there is no sound whatsoever as I think there is some hardware switch built into the physical port. However, this also happens only sometimes (also meaning startups) and other times it works as it should and the port is switched to Headphones (now displaying as plugged).
The external microphone connected to the combo jack is not detected at all - "Internal Microphone" (the mic built into the laptop body) is selected unless manually changed - and manually selecting "Microphone (unplugged)" does not get the sound from the external mic, only the internal works. Unlike the other two behaviors, this one is in place all the time, i.e. I have no way of getting the sound from an external mic.
The problem is not in the hardware - it works as it should in Windows (dual boot). Regarding the first two problems, I had them with Ubuntu 17.04 (which I had previously) too. Regarding the third problem, the external mic was not detected automatically in Ubuntu but when I switched the port manually, I got the sound from it.

Update: Just now it happened that the external microphone was detected correctly as plugged in (and is properly switched to internal mic and back when I unplug it and plug it in again) and it also registers the sound as it should. So the external mic thing is random too.
