Limits in use of Unionfs in beyond kernel

One application of Unionfs permits a LiveCD to download via pacman to an "overlay" in the operating system.  This permits the use of a downloaded program during the existing boot of the LiveCD...erased on re-boot.

If one has a Live DVD using unionfs, or even a Live CD using unionfs, what are the useable limits to downloaded programs?  Could one download, or even install via a similar "overlay" a total of 2GB of programs(equal to the uncompressed size of the 700MB CD)?  Or would the overlay be limited to 700MB?

Thus the question...what are the"install" limits in the use of unionfs in the "overlay" mechanism?

Re: Limits in use of Unionfs in beyond kernel

Googling reveals that UNIONFS enables the "union" of ro systems and r/w syatems via RAMFS.

Since RAMFS is limited in size to 1/2 of Physical ram in the computer, it seems that the limit is 1/2 of physical ram for UNIONFS as it applies to LiveCD's, the ramfs being the limiting factor.

Correct me if I am wrong, please.
