kdenlive: different failures w/ mlt & mlt-git. ffmpeg involeved?

Somewhere between 12/29/17 (more likely 1/5/18, but my memory isn't prefect) and 1/9/17, I ran -Syu and some combination of kdenlive/mlt/ffmeg got completely out-of-whack. As far as I can figure from my pacman logs, I was running kdenlive 17.12.0 and mlt 6.4.1 successfully before something broke.

mlt 6.4.1:
     w/ frei0r-plugins: $melt segfaults immediately
w/o freir: $melt runs (haven't tested w/ a file, but it shows the options at least)
mlt-git 6.5.? (.0 I think):
      $melt segfaults immediately w/ and w/o: frier0r plugins

kdenlive 17.12.0 with different mlt versions (kdenlive gets reinstalled with the different mlt versions):

(with both ffmpeg and ffmpeg2.8 in "Prefrences" setting)
    w/ MLT 6.4.1:
-many file actions, and possibly others (opening a project file, adding a clip, etc): crashes
    -rendering (kdenlive Error Log):

    w/ MLT-GIT 6.5.0
many file actions, and possibly others: works as intended.
          rendering (kdenlive Error Log):

Rendering of /home/kale/.cache/kdenlive/untitled.mp4 crashed

          command line:

Skipped method "slotGotProgressInfo" : Type not registered with QtDBus in parameter list: MessageType
Skipped method "slotTimelineClipSelected" : Pointers are not supported: ClipItem*
Skipped method "slotTimelineClipSelected" : Pointers are not supported: ClipItem*
Unsupported return type 65 QPixmap in method "grab"
Unsupported return type 65 QPixmap in method "grab"

Setting ffmpeg preference to ffmpeg2.8 also fails in rendering.

I'm not even sure where my problem is. Another post said to roll back ffmpeg (for a different rendering error). That puts me into a dependency hell that I can't figure my way out of (and, to my knowledge, doesn't explain why kden started crashing on opening a file all-of-a-sudden). ffmpeg updated this morning and I was hoping for a fix, but no luck there, either.

Re: kdenlive: different failures w/ mlt & mlt-git. ffmpeg involeved?

AL kdenlive package is built against mlt 6.4.1, and there have been some reports (search dustbin, sofar nobody seems to have created an AL  bugreport) this gives problems.

Try building kdenlive yourself against mlt-git .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
