[SOLVED] Arch linux doesn't ask for password after boot

When I boot arch and get to the login prompt, I can enter my linux user or even root and it doesn't ask for a password.

My routine has been to type in my linux user (lets me right in), then type startx (I'd also like this to be automatic, another topic I guess), which then fires up awesomewm.

Once in, to access something requiring root permissions, I still have to sudo / su as expected.

This is my home workstation and no one has physical access to the machine, or at least no one *should*, but I'd like to get to the bottom of this.

Googling something like "Arch doesn't ask for password on boot" doesn't seem to get me anything useful.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Chris

Have you set a password?

As for autostarting X, there is a wiki page specifically for that.

Re: [SOLVED] Arch linux doesn't ask for password after boot

Thanks for your replies.

Man do I feel stupid now.  Everything else about my arch linux install has been going just fine.

setting passwd actually did work.  I could have sworn I did that but I think that what must have happened was when I installed arch a couple months back (btw I did use the official arch installation instructions mostly but also some misc. tutorial threads I found when hitting a snag here or there) I became a little paranoid about locking myself out.  I was probably also still thinking about my years of muscle memory password settings with Ubuntu and misc *nix prior.

I will look into the autostarting X wiki.

I don't know the proper way to mark this thread [SOLVED].(?)

Thanks again.

Code_of_conduct#How_to_post

Finally, when a solution is found, mark your thread as solved by editing the first post and prepending the tag [SOLVED] to the title in the "Subject" field.
Note that you should avoid using [CLOSED], which is instead used by the system to mark a thread which is no longer accessible for new posts.
