I started reinstalling my arch-linux some hours ago this by following the Installation guide and everything was going smooth until I tried to get i3 windows manager up and running.
I copied the file /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc and I then added the line
exec i3
. I run startx but it would always launch a black screen and the only way out that I see is the off button. It's the same if I do
startx /usr/bin/i3
and I also tried having
exec chromium
in ~/.xinitrc but even that goes to black screen.
I have an nvidia graphics card with drivers from nvidia package. I then also installed xf86-video-vesa but it didn't solve the problem either.
I had this working properly before and I don't think I'm doing things any differently. What could be the problem?

I would not expect that to work, you cannot just add a line, you must edit the file as described in the wiki.
It's the same if I do `startx /usr/bin/i3`
That, however, should be expected to work. Please provide the xorg log from this attempt.
Do you have nvidia only, or a hybrid graphics system? What card, specifically, do you have? (what's the output of the lspci command from the xorg wiki page)?

Switching VTs fails?
In case please add the dmesg output to the above list.

Switching VTs fails?
In case please add the dmesg output to the above list.
Yes, it fails too.
How do you want me to do that? I can run startx (it crashes and I reboot). Do you want me to then send the dmesg output?
Offline
Yep, hybrid system.
Two options:
Run everything on the intel card to save power and only use the nvidia card on demand - follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee
You want maximum performance at the cost of battery life and use the nvidia card primarily - follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … ing_nvidia
note that these are mutually exclusive so pick one and stick to it.

I think running startx /usr/bin/i3 resulted in the following:

I meant the entire dmesg, but since it's a misconfigured optimus system, follow V1del's links first.

And please required the actual requested information in the future. The command I referenced in the wiki would give us the id's of both graphics cards rather than us having to read between the lines to infer that it must be a hybrid systems as that line has "3D" and not "VGA".

Went with option 2 and problem solved. Thanks
All I did was add the following lines to .xinitrc
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Yup, that's correct, please mark as [SOLVED] by editing the title of your initial post.

You're right. Had I done the command
$ lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
as specified in Xorg it would show an entry for VGA and another for 3D.
Well, at least now I see why they grep for both things in the command. I will make sure to be more careful in the future.

This is an old post, but there are ~10 of them on the internet with the same issue...and I just went through this problem and might have an additional insight.
I agree that
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto
can often solve the problem of a black screen after installing the latest nvidia driver in i3wm. However, I just went through this and one reason that
xrandr --auto
can help is that the Nvidia driver can change the system name of the display. If there are any xrandr exec statements in the i3 config that specify an output, and the driver changes the system's name for the output, the result will be a black screen.
For example, on my laptop, running xrandr showed that my display was called eDP-1, and I had an xrandr exec statement in my i3 config that specified that output. After installing the Nvidia driver, my display became eDP-1-1, and so that exec statement failed.

Well yes, you still need to reconfigure the active screens once you change the provider outputsource and whether you do that with the --auto or with specifically targeted name doesn't really matter.
Closing this old thread.
