Remove mkinitrd dependency?

Now that mkinitcpio seems to be working so well (at least for me it's ok), might it not be worth considering removing the kernel dependency on mkinitrd?
One could keep the automatic initrd generation (for cases when mkinitrd is installed) by changing the install script to use something like
if [ -x /sbin/mkinitrd ]; then ...

Re: Remove mkinitrd dependency?

I think it is planned to remove mkinitrd when kernel 2.6.18 will be out. The waiting period (of having both initrd and initcpio in use) is to give time to users to switch to initcpio so the transition to initcpio will go smoothly.
