I am using acpilight to control my Macbook's screen brightness. It works perfectly aside from the issue in the subject. Whenever I suspend and then reawake my laptop the screen brightness is reset to 40/100 (as determined with "xbacklight -get"), regardless of the value of this prior to suspension (I've tested both above and below).
Any ideas? Thanks!

Why aren't you using xbacklight itself for setting the brightness? Also, have you checked the suspend/resume logs for any hints?
Finally, as a workaround you can run a resume hook to set the brightness again.

Hey, sorry for late reply!
I was pointed towards acpilight by the Wiki for the sake of setting my Macbook's keyboard backlight: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ma … _Backlight. It'd also make an eventual transition to Sway/Wayland easier.
For what it's worth, I just tried uninstalling acpilight and installing xorg-xbacklight - the keyboard backlight control stopped working as expected, and the issue in the OP remained.
Which logs am I best off checking for hints?
Cheers!

Try checking your suspend/resume logs (depending on what you are using for that). As a workaround, you can use a resume hook to set the correct brightness.

Just wanted to say that although it took me nearly a year to come back to this, your suggestion to use a resume hook to set the brightness correctly did work. Thanks!
Here's what I came up with here.

This has just solved the problem on Budgie desktop, thank you.
Oops I see this is an old thread, sorry
