I use mutter-781835-workaround to fix the problems with the nvidia driver screen tearing.
With the latest nvidia 390 on the 4.15 kernel, the high CPU use problem is back. I can't revert to the 387 driver as it won't install properly on the latest kernel.
Anyone know which project I should report this to - gnome or nvidia? Is there a reason why this driver is so difficult? It seems that every other version has a performance regression. This configuration with my card is at least 5 years old, why does this break so easily?
Solved in 390.42

Report it to NVIDIA. There are known issues with the 390 driver including periodic flicker on automatic clock scaling.
