[SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

Hello, i cannot mount any usb flash drives under kernel 4.15 i am using the mq-bfq scheduler for all disks, with the same settings and flashdrives in kernel 4.14.15 everything works as expected. In kernel 4.15 an endless loop of mounting persists i cannot eject the drive , or stop the process.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

I cannot even reboot the system because disk manager is trying to stop the process of mounting for ever.Only option after trying to mount a usb drive is hard reset.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

The situation has gotten worse with kernel 4.15.1-2 from the staging repo. Before with linux 4.15.1-1 i could only mount 1 of my 5 usb drives, now none of them work, also when i try to reboot the system it hangs, this time with no disk manager job running no error logs or anything.Kernel 4.15.x seems to be borked, probably because the spectre and meltdown work happened in the middle of its development. Filed a bug report ---> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104937

Please change your topic title to something that actually describes your issue. Also, post the journal from an affected session. You should post it on the bug report too.

You explicitly mention bfq-mq, so presumably something is logged/printed to make you feel this is relevant to the problem, please share this information too.

Do you have any problems using the other schedulers?

What is 'disk manager', and do you have problems mounting disks with 'mount'?

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

Cannot mount with "mount" because according to fdisk device does not exist, despite showing in the log as /dev/sdc,other programs as well like blkid and gparted hang while reading devices. Also cannot reboot the system after i plug and unplug a usb drive, that's really weird,i will try non blk schedulers.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

With default cfq scheduler everything works as expected under kernel 4.15.1-2!!! so the problem is down to the blk-mq schedulers.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

So, i suppose i should mark this as solved, the solution is do not use blk-mq shedulers until this is fixed upstream

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

The issue does not occur on this system using mq-deadline can reproduce using bfq.  You also reported it upstream against udisks instead of upstream against linux.
Edit:
Does not occur using kyber either looking like an issue specific to bfq.
Edit2:
Does not occur using none,  mq-deadline or kyber on a usb thumb drive,  can use any mq scheduler for internal sata devices including bfq.
So the issue seems to require the device use usb and the scheduler be bfq.

Confirmed that other mq schedulers work fine, i ll close the bug maybe report it under kernel bugzilla

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

I am bisecting the issue between 4.15 and 4.14 using ls to see if /dev/sde* returns partitions if not that commit is bad otherwise good.
If nothing unexpected happens I hope to find the first bad commit within 24 hours which you could then cross check.

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

Using /dev/sde* was a idea if the device is left present partitions are enumerated running #blkid appears to be a more reliable test.
Edit:
bisection log the result seems wrong need to double check it

This seems more reasonable still needs a cross check.
Edit:
Double checked the commit seems to be the first bad commit reported on the upstream bug report.
Edit2:
Attempt at a backported fix with this blkid works successfully so it does appear to be http://lkml.org/lkml/2018/2/7/529

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

Strange there was no patch in the in 4.15.3 to bfq or the block subsystem.  See also https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/57496

Re: [SOLVED] Kernel 4.15.1-2 cannot mount any usb drives with mq-bfq

This issue has affected me on all 4.15 versions, though in [core], not [testing]. I finally just went back to CFQ for the time being. It's annoying, but at least the 'fix' is easy enough.
