Install custom keyboard layout "permanently"

I modified one of the standard keyboard layouts in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/ but every time the package is updated my custom layout is overwritten and have to copy it again.

Is there a "permanent" way of overriding the standard keyboard layout with my custom one?

Re: Install custom keyboard layout "permanently"

a) use another filename (inherit the one you use and only alter the specific aspects)
b) use pacman.conf NoExtract

Like seth says, use another name, e.g. /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/custom.  You can layer it on top of another layout with an include directive, e.g. include "level3(caps_switch)".
