PS4 controller suddenly stops connecting over bluetooth

So I've been running my HTPC on archlinux for quite a while now.

Recently I've gone the route of wanting a controller to use in conjunction with Kodi on it.

Now I've gotten myself a PS4 v2 controller which worked right out of the box and didn't make any problems until it stopped connecting recently ( this was without any updates or changes in hardware mind ).

Now I thought it must be the device but alas it works on a different computer / my mobile phone!

I then thought well lets re-pair that thing, doesn't work, actually fails out at the pairing stage. It apparently CAN connect but then fails to keep the connection.

Now the strange part starts.

Suddenly its able to connect again and everything works as before. Just like that. Until a week later, same as before.

Its driving me mad. Anyone got a clue what the issue could be/how I should debug this?

The only error message I ever saw regarding this was:

[94168.073847] hidraw: raw HID events driver (C) Jiri Kosina
[94168.075658] Bluetooth: HIDP (Human Interface Emulation) ver 1.2
[94168.075661] Bluetooth: HIDP socket layer initialized
[94176.383083] Bluetooth: hci0 corrupted ACL packet
[94176.578114] Bluetooth: hci0 ACL packet for unknown connection handle 12
[94257.889566] NET: Registered protocol family 38
[94608.797813] Bluetooth: hci0 ACL packet for unknown connection handle 16

however that doesn't help me much. It also only happens sometimes, and only during the first connection to the device ( which lasts longer than subsequent attempts), the message doesn't show up when the device connects normally though.

Just now connection (after restart of pc) using ds4drv succeeded. Connecting and pairing using bluetoothctl did not. In fact there's not even any error in the logs now when attempting to pair ..... (it also claims pairing succeeded after killing bluetoothctl which gets stuck)
