nvidiafb(linux) vs nivdia-driver(TM)

Hi,

I am using nvidia-driver(TM), but recently,
having some trouble, when i try nvidia-installer(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1.run) with newest linux kernel like 2.6.18-rc1 or 2.6.17-git2x series.

It failed.

and other problem i tried directfb with nvidia-installer, it also failed...

I would switch to nvidiafb if  it's performence is similar with nividia-installer.

I removed my sig, cause i select the flag, the flag often the target of enemy.

Re: nvidiafb(linux) vs nivdia-driver(TM)

Are you getting any significant error messages or is it just crapping out on you? I ask because the last NVidia driver that works well with my video card is the 8178 driver (I know yours is different). In order to get it to function with modern kernels, I had to apply the patch from this page:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021

Also, in order for the NVidia installer to properly find the kernel sources, I used this command to install it:

./n* -k $(uname -r)

Hopefully something here is useful to you.

Thanks for your advice.

i know what i did(2.6.18-rc1 there is gpl license conflict problem
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72994 ), and finally i found that it solved by simply looking into the nvidia-installer(TM) source code, but it closed.

I am just annoying. this is just like attitude "we fix it, you just look at it and fucking use it"

i want CELL would not use nvidia graphic card and hope open graphic card will success.

No kidding. When I realized that any driver later than the 8178 driver doesn't function right with my FX5600 card, and that the card wasn't going to be supported any longer, I became fairly frustrated. It's a good card; I don't need anything better right now. I couldn't afford something better anyway. I'm just glad to find a patch that will keep this card functioning correctly for a while; and enough where-with-all to keep the driver in permanent storage.

Re: nvidiafb(linux) vs nivdia-driver(TM)

I'm having problems with my Nvidia 6150 using the latest driver and kernel. It just doesn't start up sometimes. I don't get any error messages at all - the xorg log looks fine, but the screen just hangs before the Nvidia logo displays.
So much for having better drivers than ATI.

I will try the patch

I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...

Re: nvidiafb(linux) vs nivdia-driver(TM)

Don't try the patch, just use "nv"
If you don't care about 3D, the performence not so vary..

sudo pacman -S xf86-video-nv
/etc/X11/xorg.conf wrote:

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Card0"
    # Driver         "nvidia"
    Driver         "nv"
    VendorName     "All"
    BoardName      "All"
EndSection
