Hey all. First post.
I have just installed Arch Linux on a x120e notebook and i3 seems to not display correctly.
I have followed the official wiki pretty closely. I edited ~/.xinitrc and added "exec i3". I start i3 by running startx/xinit. I get:

Exiting due to signal.
Is this a video driver issue? Otherwise, Xorg seems to display correctly.
Thanks for your help.
Edit:
Xorg.0.log

.xinitrc
exec i3
i3 config (vanilla, copied from /etc/i3/config)
https://gist.github.com/anonymous/29fb6 … d85806d8cc
I copied the default i3 config to ~/.config/i3/config because there was none.
Result is the same as in the screenshot above except there is no window in the middle.

Read the Code of Conduct and only post thumbnails http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cod … s_and_code
And post your Xorg.log, and full .xinitrc and i3 config.

Thanks.
I updated the OP with the information above.

I have installed modules fbdev and vesa (see EE tags in Xorg log) but result is the same.
In the meantime, I have installed openbox and while I get a menu on right-click, the items are invisible (but clickable). They yield dialog boxes with invalid (square) characters.
So I suspect characters in general do not display properly, because I get the same type of coloured boxes in i3.

Your xinitrc is incomplete: read the wiki page and source the necessary files to ensure your session is not broken.

fbdev and vesa are not necessary, you may want to remove them again. The errors for those in the Xorg log are to be expected - they're not a problem as long as you have a proper video driver installed, which you seem to.
This sounds primarily like an issue with fonts. But first to cover another simple point, can you post the output of the following:
lspci | grep -e VGA -e 3D
On fonts issues, I'm not the most well versed to help, but the following check might be a good start:
pacman -Qs freetype
"UNIX is simple and coherent..." - Dennis Ritchie, "GNU's Not UNIX" - Richard Stallman

Respectively:

# pacman -Qs freetype

local/libxft 2.3.2-1

That all looks good. This is a bit of a wild guess, but could there be a locale issue:
locale -a
localectl
"UNIX is simple and coherent..." - Dennis Ritchie, "GNU's Not UNIX" - Richard Stallman

# locale -a

POSIX
# localectl

"surprise" - how do you intend to see any text if you've no fonts installed?
Pick one:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sor … ilib&q=ttf
ensure it has a monospace variant.

Ah...
I figured there was a default font or something, since Xorg worked and the installation guide never mentions fonts except in the "eye candy" General recommendations section.
I installed ttf-dejavu. Openbox seems to work now. Still not sure about i3 but I will figure it out.
Thanks everyone.
