No prompt after boot when in IPMI/iDRAC/KVM|QEMU

This is reported as a bug, however I wanted to see if I could get a wider set of eyes on it by posting in the BBS.

When booting, post initramfs you see the standard "starting version 237" but never get a login prompt. It appears that services come up fine so systems provisioned with ssh are still reachable... however you've lost the ability to log into your metal. This manifests on virtual machines within KVM/QEMU, which means on hosts like vultr you won't get a login prompt at their web console. This also manifests on physical systems that have out-of-band management interfaces like iDRAC and IPMI. We use almost all IPMI based systems and we do not use KVMs, so we're pretty heavily impacted by this.

Linux 4.15.1 didn't have this problem, it manifested in 4.15.2 and persists now in 4.15.3

We've tested by building a kernel where # CONFIG_X86_SYSFB is not set and everything is back to normal. Alternatively running LTS kernel is fine, however it's only fine because right now that configuration option is not set.

What is the likelihood that this would be changed in the Arch kernel configuration?

There is some interesting discussion and more references in this mailing list post.

Apparently this may be resolved soon with the release of 4.15.3-2, ref.
