One of the updates in the last 1 week has caused synclient to stop working.
$ synclient
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?
I tried to see if the touchpad is detected at all
$ dmesg | grep Syn
[ 12.761399] input: SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad as /devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input6
$ cat /proc/bus/input/devices | grep Syn
N: Name="SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"
So the device is being detected all right, but xinput says something else
$ xinput list
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ xwayland-pointer:13 id=6 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ xwayland-relative-pointer:13 id=7 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ xwayland-keyboard:13 id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
Therefore, no touchpad, as far as xinput is concerned.
What happened suddenly?

synclient is part of xf86-input-synaptics ... how this would have ever remotely worked on wayland (or even xwayland) is beyond me.
Start "gnome on Xorg" instead.

Sorry, you are right. I just checked my startup script, and it is syndaemon, not synclient, that has stopped working
Anyway, I did what you said, and I have both syndaemon and synclient working again. So, thanks a lot!
