Dear community,
I just rebooted my laptop after maybe a week and did an upgrade before. Now, when I try to boot, the system freezes when booting normally. I passed loglevel=7 and it displays me as last four messages before the freeze:
[11.268367] i915 0000:00:02.0: enabling device (0006 -> 0007)
[11.273748] [drm] Memory usable by graphics device = 2048M
Starting Update UTMP about System Boot/Shutdown....
[11.275607] fb: switching to inteldrmfb from EFI VGA
When I run the system with nomodeset, I can get to the terminal login prompt. My guess that this is all related to the graphics drivers somehow, but I do not know how to proceed now.
Kind regards,
AndreasGB

Which kernel version is the system using with the issue and what was the version without the issue? If you downgrade just the kernel to the known good version does the issue cease?

Thanks for your reply loqs!
linux-4.14.15-1 works, linux-4.15.3-2 is broken. How can I help debug this?
Kind regards,

Try blacklisting nvidiafb.

This fixed it, too. Is that a known bug?

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=234646 seems the config changes in linux-4.15.3-2 is causing issues.
Edit:
You could report it on the arch bugtracker see if the maintainers will consider reverting the config changes.

Hmm, but is this an Arch problem or an upstream one?

That can probably only be answered by upstream. However if the benefits of the config changes linux-4.15.3-2 introduced do not outweigh these current issues then why not revert the change.
None of the options changed is new with 4.15 see:

Thank you for this post. Indeed blacklisting nvidiafb fixes the problem. loqs thank you for the link to the option of nvidiafb, I see I don't need it for my graphics chip, it seems it supports quite old chips only.
Before finding this post I found on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … el_update/ that setting the kernel option intel_iommu=igfx_off also fixes the issues. It does for me at least.
I tried both solutions individually and both work. I did not try them at the same time. I think blacklisting nvidiafb is a better solution on modern chips. I guess the issue arises in modern laptops with hybrid GPUs intel/nvidia

I reported the problem now in the Arch bug tracker: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/57578
