Hi,
I have a Dell XPS 15 4k and an external monitor Dell U2718Q 4k but I can't get the external monitor to have a refresh rate of 60Hz even if the native resolution is "4K 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz" (https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/accesso … d/210-amsg).
The screen of my laptop has 60Hz refresh rate. There is a big difference when I move my mouse on the second monitor, it is kind of lagging.
I disabled my Nvidia GTX 1050 to have more battery (as per the recommendations here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_15_9560). Could it be that the graphic card I am using is too weak to handle both screens ?
I tried the following setup :
1) laptop -> hdmi -> monitor : 30Hz max, I could choose between 4 different refresh rates (all lower than 30Hz)
2) laptop -> docking station Dell WD15 -> display port cable -> monitor : 30Hz max (is it possible that there is a limitation in the docking station ?)
I tried to use nvidia proprietary drivers but I can't even boot so I need to find out why it is not working but I currently don't have time. I never reach SDDM.
xrandr gives me this
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 3840 x 4320, maximum 8192 x 8192
eDP-1 connected primary 3840x2160+0+2160 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 346mm x 194mm
3840x2160 60.00*+ 59.98 59.97
DP-1-2 connected 3840x2160+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 609mm x 349mm
3840x2160 29.98*
2560x1440 59.95
I am connected with the docking station and a displayport cable.
Even with the "Nouveau" drivers and the discrete GPU enabled, I can't have 60Hz on the external monitor so I guess it is a hardware problem.
Should I buy an adapter USB-C to DP ?
Any idea ?
Thank you.

Soooo, the only way to get 60Hz is by using a cable USB-C to HDMI 2.0 or USB-C to DisplayPort 1.2
The WD15 I have does not support 40@60Hz, only 1080p@60Hz.
For information, the docking station TB16 supports 4k@60Hz for two screens (read that on reddit).
This means that if we want to use a external monitor 4k@60Hz, it is impossible to connect a docking station.
