cups failure

lost printer from upgrade about a week ago.  Just upgraded again.  Still no joy with printer.
"unable to retrieve the printer list.  Error message received from print manager:  connection to cups server failed."

Everything ok prior to upgrade.  Any help?

Re: cups failure

I also have the same problem

I though it was a permissions issue bc it happened to my cdwriter after the latest big update, but even as root I can't print

even If I restart cupsd manaully the printers (usb and LP) all stopped status no matter what you do

Re: cups failure

the problem is that in the kde control panel you can't go past the driver choose step bc is says the driver does not exist or access denied, even as root.

even with the web interface newly installed or previously installed printers show a permanent stopped status, no matter how many times you click start printer.

tried to downgrade to previous version of cups but it won't start bc of missing right version of libssl which I can't seem to install, it's not its own package.

Edit /etc/cups/cups.conf so that cups is only listening to port 631. That is, comment out the other listening line. Then restart cups.

Re: cups failure

the new cupsd.conf disables the socket listen by default, this caused some problems with kde.

Re: cups failure

There are multiple problems with CUPS and printing right now. In my case, the KDE print manager says libgnutls.so.12 is missing. This message appeared after upgrade. I am quite amazed that this hasn't been mentioned here yet. Perhaps I'm the only one to encounter this error message, which seems unlikely to me...

The libgnutls.so.13 does exist. Shared libraries have been upgraded, but some parts of KDE still require the old versions. Recompiling CUPS and KDE using makepkg did not solve the problem. This is the main issue that should be addressed before further experiments...

Unfortunately, missing libraries are not the only trouble. Backends do not work. There are about five threads about CUPS failrues right now and some of them suggest changing user rights in /dev. This does not help at all. Regardless the user rights of /dev/lp0, I still encounter lines like this in the error log:

[06/Jul/2006:12:36:33 +0200] PID 2890 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel) stopped with status 1!
E [06/Jul/2006:12:36:33 +0200] [Job 535] Unable to open parallel port device file "/dev/lp0": Permission denied
E [06/Jul/2006:12:44:18 +0200] Unable to open listen socket for address :::631 - Address family not supported by protocol.

Needless to say that none of my printers work. Both LPT and USB backends are dead. If somebody solves this puzzle, please give me a hint.

I couldn't even get cups to start after the socket line was removed. Why not just echo a message about KDE users in a .install file instead?

Re: cups failure

Hi

I tried all tips here, but the printer just does nothing.
There are also no errors in the log.
Printerjob just stays there forever.

And these are the moments where Linux, after using it for 4 years as my standard os, still pissing me off.

pkgrel 3's config worked fine, it was 4 that gave me the trouble. Specificaly the missing socket line.

Re: cups failure

There must have been an update that required a reboot other than the kernel because last night I rebooted and now its working just fine. Thanks anyway  smile

Re: cups failure

the old config did kill your cups if doing remote administration probably you run into this problem first.

Re: cups failure

Close, but still no cigar!
At least cups started, configured printer and test says sending test to printer.
Jobs lists test processing, but the printer never responds.
Have done all the things in this thread.  Got this far by repeatedly running system updates.

Two lessons here:
Keep Mepis 6.0 on board for printing.
Never update directly a stable version of Arch without having gone thru a test version.  If this version begins working again that's what I will do.  Should know this since Arch has been my preferred distro since 0.6.

Thank all of you for your responses.  Any clues on actually getting to the printer beyond what is in the thread?  Want to see a config file?

I find that sometimes I must reconfigure the printer by removing it and reinstalling under KDE Control Panel. This seems necessary if a test print is sent to the printer but no printing occurs. I find this under Arch, Mepis 6, and Fedora Core 5.

Re: cups failure

CUPS still dosen't work, despite all the updates and tips. What's wrong? This has never happened before. None of my printers work. Both LPT and USB printers are blocked. I reconfigured them both, using the newest cupsd.conf. This is really frustrating.

The web interface of CUPS shows both of my printers correctly. When I try to print (no matter what), the job is accepted and enqueued. A few seconds later, it says "printer not online". What could this be caused by? What should I check?

Additionally, kprinter still does not work. It is still compiled against the old version of libgnutls, which doesn't exist on the system any more. It might be worthwhile to fix that thing. But how can this be done? I recompiled KDE using makepkg, but the problem persists.

Either nobody prints or nobody uses KDE, otherwise this forum would be full of desperate posts. If this didn't happen in summer, a month without printing would be devastating for me...

Re: cups failure

Got it!
I just switched to<code> LogLevel debug </code>and here is what I obtained when searching through the huge log:

D [20/Jul/2006:01:58:43 +0200] [Job 545] gs: error while loading shared libraries: libgnutls.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

That seems to be still the same problem with libraries. Ghostscript can be really nasty. What can I do to fix this? Is there a new version compiled against libgnutls.so.13 already?
I also see these lines repeating many times in the log:

D [20/Jul/2006:02:04:53 +0200] [Job 545] LPGETSTATUS returned a port status of 08...
W [20/Jul/2006:02:04:53 +0200] [Job 545] Printer off-line.

Does it have anything in common with the Ghostscript failure or is it a separate problem?

Done.

The first problem disappeared, but the second one persists. The printer appears to be offline. This is a USB printer that cannot be offline... What could that mean?

Re: cups failure

I had that problem too for some reason. I had to go and manually login via cups interface and go through the procedures of setting up a new printer. I got the end and hit cancel or something and all of the sudden it went online...
If you haven't restarted cups after the ghostscript thing do so with /etc/rc.d/cups restart. If you've had a recent udev update and haven't booted, that may explain it as well. Use /etc/start_udev to restart that.

Re: cups failure

I have already rebooted many times. (This is a laptop...) Deleted both of my printers using the localhost:631 interface of CUPS. Added them again. They appear to be online as long as I don't send a job... Once I try to print, they go offline and the server keeps polling desperately, which can be seen in the log. CUPS is angry with me.

Arch's cups package has been updated today. Does this help?
