Dell Latitude D520 and xorg

I am not a first time user of Arch Linux but I still consider myself a noob.

I am having som trouble setting up xorg with my new laptop kindly given to me by my workplace. I have had xorg 7, with both aiglx and compiz working on an Ubuntu system. I wanted to go back to Arch after using Ubuntu for a while for speed and personal preference reasons. I am therefore looking forward to an answer that could help me out!

both xorg and hwd find my card but seem to think the vesa driver is the way to go. using the X -config command I am able to get X to start and see my mouse cursor (nothing else, I am guessing because I havn't yet installed a WM or DE). This works with both the xorg and hwd made config files (X -configure/ hwd -x). But a closer look at the config files shows me that the vesa driver is being used. I DO have the i810 driver and the i915 dri modules installed.

After looking through the forums I found a post about the gma950 integrated graphics which I also have on my computer. I followed the instructions there and downloaded a snapshot from dri.freedesktop and moved the new i810 driver and the new dri 915 module to the right places replacing the original ones. X -configure now makes an xorg.conf file with the 810 driver but fails to start and I get a lockup which can only be fixed with a hard reboot. hwd -x still makes a conf file with the vesa driver loaded.

Any ideas? I was looking forward to putting a system together that is quicker and more "for me" than ubuntu.

Grateful for any help!

Re: Dell Latitude D520 and xorg

Hello,
maybe a stupid question but did you just run x without creating /etc/X11/xorg file?
Later versions of X does generate settings at runtime but I do have the same problem if just running it without a tweaked configfile.

My hw is Dell D600
agpgart: Intel 855PM Chipset.
ATI M900
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.22.0 20051229 on minor 0
[drm] Loading R200 Microcode

paste your xorg.conf after running "xorgconfig"

/xor
in Sweden too...

Re: Dell Latitude D520 and xorg

hwd only make a sample xorg.conf which sometimes needs to be tweaked. BTW,  hwd is not really wrong as the vesa driver does work with i810 cards even if it's not performant.

Install the xf86-video-i810 package if you haven't done so and change:
Driver      "vesa"
to:
Driver      "i810"

As for the black screen, you need to install a DE/WM and change your ~/.xinitrc appropriately (if you want to use startx to start the X-server).

I have not been using this for it hasn't been working. This config file is what I get AFTER installing snapshots from dri.freedesktop.org. If I use the drivers which pacman installs (I HAVE installes them myself) for the i810 drivers then X -configure just gives me vesa.

hwd -xa gives me this:

If I change vesa in the device section to i810 I get error messages and X won't start. This is using the pacman i810 drivers. X doesn't start but quits on it's own giving me error mes. If I use drivers from dri.freedesktop.org then X just hangs and I have to do a hard reboot.

vesa works I guess... but I would like to be able to get either xgl or aiglx with compiz working as i did on ubuntu... should be possible shouldn't it
