Zomg arch is great, goodbye everyone else.

Having *current binaries available is great. Plus the testing cycle seems to be faster, and in general, the distro seems to be held together a bit better, if that makes any sense. AUR is frieken awesome, as are the forums.
Anyway, this post isn't about how much I like Arch, it is about whether there's anything better/different out there. I've bounced around all the usual distros (RH, Gentoo, Ubuntu, etc...) and was wondering if the BSD's had anything novel to offer? Does package management get better than pacman? I'd rather not spend too much time on another "Gentoo" when there's another "Arch" out there. big_smile

*No offense to slack wink

Re: Zomg arch is great, goodbye everyone else.

i haven't tried freebsd but if i was going to test another os it would be that or if i didn't need alot of packages: frugalware. Although for all i know, they might have a bunch of packages now i doubt they have more than arch that have aur.

checkout freebsd.org ports though and search for anything; they have aloooot of packages. probably more than any linux distro smile

maybe their package system sucks though and it is harder to make a package for yourself than it is in arch; i don't know.

Or get really weird and go for a non-linux os like syllableOS or haikuOS or skyOS.

I'm going to give OpenSolaris (NexentaOS) a try soon.

Re: Zomg arch is great, goodbye everyone else.

After using freebsd for over a half year, Arch was the only thing pulling me back to linux, and that's alot because Arch has some of the things I like in BSD. *BSD package management might need some love though. Beware if you test it, you might feel like a n00b again (at least I felt that way). I expected it to be another linux distro, but there were lots of differences too from linux.

Arch and Kernel 2.6.x is the reason I use Linux today. I used FreeBSD until I found Arch (I found Arch right around when 0.5 came out).

PC-BSD is nice:

You can use ports and their binary package system. However, they don't work very well together.

Arch now has a LiveCD/DVD call Larch build in user contributions.

Check it out!

i automatically disregard any post with 'zomg' in the title.  The username omgwtfbyobbq doesn't help, either.

I can't have everyone depending on me for their broiled meats! But, I digress, or have regressed, or have ingressed upon distress? Anyway, thanks to all for the recommendations, this should be interesting.  big_smile
