After a recent update, my system has been experiencing freezes when I'm issuing an update with pacman -Syu (especially when downloading texlive which is a very big package), and sometimes when browsing (Firefox). When frozen, the mouse works fine, I can even start a terminal, but any command I issue hangs.
I am using a broadcom wireless driver. Specifically I have broadcom-wl-dkms installed. I am suspecting that the driver might somehow be causing this issue as it happens during tasks requiring network traffic.
I am not sure how to debug this issue other than trying a different wireless adapter. I also don't see anything suspicious in the logs, like journalctl. Additionally, the virtual console key shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+F1..6) do not seem to work.
Let me know if I can provide any logs that could help in debugging the issue.

The freeze happens during network activity, i.e. in the middle of a long transfer in pacman.

So this is *not* a temporary freeze that only lasts as long as the network I/O?
In case keep "dmesg -w" running, if you perform a hard reboot, the kernel messages/log will not be synced to disk.
Also: you seem to have 3 NICs, (ethernet, built-in wifi, usb wifi, latter not reflected in the provided lsusb): does it matter which interface is used (ie. does this only happen on the wired ethernet or only on the built-in wifi, ...)?

No it is not termporary. I've never seen a freeze like it. As I said, for the first few minutes, I can even launch a terminal, but anything I try to run from the terminal hangs. The mouse is always responsive.

I'll do that and see if I can cause this problem again.

I have a Fritz dongle I remembered didn't work, but though I'd try it out anyway. That is why you see it in the dmesg. I basically only have a pcie broadcom card, and an ethernet one. The ethernet card is not hooked up as the LAN outlet is very far away. That's why I opted for a wireless card. Unfortunately, I did not do a research on the supported cards beforehand.

Does the chip work w/ the brcm80211 or b43 modules?
If you can try this on the wired interface (just for testing), we might be able to isolate the bcm4360 as the culprit.

I tried to cause the problem to show up again and indeed a problem showed up in dmesg. Unfortunately, it was not written out so I hope the following picture is sufficient,

Here is the wireless adapter. As far as I know it is not supported by other drivers other than the broadcom propriety ones.
In desperation, I'll move my pc close to the outlet and repeat the test.

No, I don't. My problem looks similar, my drive is also ext4. If I understand correctly it is not limited to scsi.
I will try kernel 4.14.19 as indicated by the thread you linked.

You could also try to download some of this (or anything suitable) to /dev/null and ~/test.file respectively:

The ext4 thing should not hit if you direct them into /dev/null

Good idea. I tried downloading a few times to /dev/null without any problems. Downloading to disk made the usual problem show up.
I will have to downgrade kernel, but I'll have to see how to do that as I don't have any previous versions saved and I need the broadcom module installed.
