How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

Hi everyone.

cant find this anywhere, but how do you set the icon theme for openbox? Not the gtk icon theme, but the one openbox uses for the title bar? Or at very least, where does openbox get the icons from for the title bar?

I use tint2 and pcmanfm and the icons are set correctly in the openbox menu, tint2 launcher, tint2 systray, pcmanfm and everywhere else i can see, and the only place they are wrong is the openbox window title bar and tint2 task bar, which i assume uses the window title bar for its icons.

I have tried the /usr/share/pixelmaps folder, but its not using those icons (changed a couple, rebooted, but no difference), and all the icon theme lines in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme are set correctly.

cheers

Openbox appears to use the icons defined in ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (as does tint2).

Nope. Thanks for your quick reply, but that is already set to the correct icon theme, but openbox is getting the icons from somewhere else. As mentioned already, Tint2 is getting the correct icons already, except in the taskbar where it is using the ones openbox finds.

Post your configuration files.

EDIT: put "tint2" in the title, o9000 is a member here and may take an interest.

Thanks pal. Which config files do you want?

The relevant ones smile

Let's try tint2rc and openbox's rc.xml file along with ~/.gtkrc-2.0, thanks!

Re: How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

It's been a while, but last time I used either of these they only used the client program's own icon.  The only way to change the icon was to change what the client sets as it's icon (some programs allow this to be configured, some don't).

Re: How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

For simplicity I've tended to use lxappearance to set icons, mouse-cursor, etc in openbox, but having said that, all lxappearance does is edit your ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file so don't know if that would be any help.  I see also that openbox's rc.xml file only seems to get an idea about icons from the theme you set so are you using some sort of custom theme?  Using lxappearance here I can see the change in the icon on the openbox title bar change as I select a new one.

Using lxappearance here I can see the change in the icon on the openbox title bar change as I select a new one.

yeah, I use lxappearance to and it works great for setting the theme, but as mentioned above the theme doesnt fully apply in the openbox title bar or tint2 task bar.

It's been a while, but last time I used either of these they only used the client program's own icon.  The only way to change the icon was to change what the client sets as it's icon (some programs allow this to be configured, some don't).

How do you mean "what the client set"?

Re: How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

Just what it says.  Every client program under X sets the icon for it's window(s).  If it fails to do so, the window manager may use a generic icon.  In openbox, the generic icon for any client window that doesn't provide an icon looks like little terminal window.  Toolkit themes have no effect on these icons as they are not parts of the toolkit.

Urxvt, as an example, has a command line flag "-icon" or the Xresources item "iconFile" for specifying what icon it should use.  Some other programs also allow you to configure this, some don't.

There are also tools that can 'inject' a new icon into a running program, I think wmctrl can do this.

Cool, makes sense, so where does openbox get that generic icon from?

Re: How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

$ pacman -Flq openbox  | grep png$
usr/share/pixmaps/openbox.png

And you can use `xprop` to see what (if any) icon a client program sets (under _NET_WM_ICON).

So they are not in there.

Then you do not have openbox (properly) installed from [community].

I do, but I removed all the icons in that folder and put them in "New" when I started trying to solve this myself. I will put them back once resolved. So with no icons in that folder now, where is openbox getting the generic icons from?

*headdesk*

How should anyone else know.  What does the generic icon look like (note icon singular, it only has one).  I think in addition to the file under /usr/share/ it may be baked in to the openbox binary - but it's been a while since I dug around the code.

In any case, I don't see how this is relevant or helpful for your end goals.

Its icons plural, as lots of icons dont show up correctly in the openbox window title bar and tint2 taskbar. Icons include steam, xterm, arandr and kodi to name a few. Where is openbox getting the icons for these from, and why is not using the correct icons like the rest of the system?

Re: How do you change the icon theme for tint2 taskbar & Openbox Title bar

No, it is not plural.  There is only one single default icon that openbox uses if the client doesn't specify their own icon.  This default is set on line 2310 of openbox/client.c.

All those other icons that are not what you want are what is specified by the client programs, and (again) they'd need to be configured in the client if it is possible at all.  Openbox just uses whatever the client provides in _NET_WM_ICON, or if that is not set, it uses it's own (singular) default.

Openbox is *not* looking through the filesystem or toolkit theme configs to pick an image to use.  It just takes what the client window sends it.

The programs I mentioned before dont use just one icon, they have different individual icon that is relevant to the application, but does not match the icon I want it to use.

Other applications are using the theme that is set by gtk, for example pcmanfm uses the correct icon in the title bar and task bar. So openbox is not just taking "what the client window sends it" for pcmanfm.

Yes, it is.  Openbox has no dependency on gtk: it does not use gtk themes at all.  Pcmanfm, in contrast, does depend on gtk and can use information in gtk themes to decide what it puts in it's _NET_WM_ICON property.  Some other programs may do this too, but - as you can see - not all of them.

So like I said, configuring these icons must be done in the client programs on a case by case basis.  Some may take some information from a gtk theme, others may even use a qt theme, but most will either have their own configuration mechanism or potentially no way at all to change the icon (short of resetting it on each invocation with mwctrl).

ok, makes sense, thanks for letting me pick your brain. Going to have to figure out where each program is getting its icon from and how if at all possible to change it. cheers.
