I am a little confused as to the differences in and the uses of these two files. Which one is actually deciding which file to use for designating which kernel to boot from by default?
"/boot/loader/loader.conf" or "/usr/share/systemd/bootctl/loader.conf"
I use systemd-boot.

See Systemd-boot first tip box.
Edit:
You could also find the information from the the first note in man 1 bootctl links to https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specif … LoaderSpec

Ok so "/usr/share/systemd/bootctl/loader.conf" is just an example file and "/boot/loader/loader.conf" is the actual file that is used.
Thanks so much:)
