As there was a kernel update I immediately restarted my machine and soon found that I was now having seemingly random Xorg crashes. I later discovered that these happen every time I move my mouse cursor over to my second monitor, which I have configured as a separate X screen using Zaphod Mode. Here is my relevant Xorg.0.log and Xorg.conf file:

It also shows the following lines after I get kicked back to the command line after a crash:

I launched Blackbox just to make sure it was not an Xfce issue, and had the same result. The second head seems to work fine in most other respects, as I can launch applications using the DISPLAY environment variable without any issues, but when I launch a full screen application on the second head Xorg does crash in the same way. I can launch full screen applications on my primary monitor, and indeed when playing games that lock the mouse cursor to the one screen I can not make it crash. I am using a Radeon HD 6870 graphics card with the Gallium3D radeon drivers.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

Did you try to use the modesetting (and, if supported, amdgpu) driver?

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

amdgpu is for newer graphics cards than mine. I am already using the appropriate radeon driver, and indeed, have been doing so without issue on this setup for over two years.

This seems to be a recently introduced regression bug.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

The idea was to isolate the cause - if it doesn't happen w/ the modesetting driver, you know it's in the radeon ddx driver.

Pardon my confusion then, but I am still unsure what you wish for me to try?

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

Remove xf86-video-ati (and the configurations explicitly mentioning radeon). Without it, xorg will fall back to a built in modesetting driver for output.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

Thank you V1del, I understand now.

I am having some trouble replicating the problem on the modesetting driver though, as I can not get it to accept my modified xorg.conf. Just removing the xorg.conf file causes me to have one large screen stretched over two displays using RandR, which does not suffer from the same issue, but this is also true with radeon. It does seem to be a Zaphod specific issue.

According to this article the modesetting driver does have Zaphod mode support, so there must be something wrong with my configuration:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= … etting-Add

Here is the xorg.conf I have been trying with the modesetting driver:

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

Something you will also want to check is that the randr names you pass to ZaphodHeads are still the same, they can differ between modesetting and radeon.

And if that's not it, please provide your xorg log.

Thank you again V1del, that was indeed the issue.

I can now confirm that the problem is indeed with the radeon ddx driver as with modesetting I am not experiencing any crashes. Thank you for the suggestion seth.

The last time I had any real issues with the radeon driver the alternative was just VESA, I was unaware that the modesetting driver existed. Seeing as how it does not impair my 3D performance and my desktop usage seems about the same this seems to be a very acceptable compromise until we can get this bug squashed.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing when using second monitor with Zaphod Mode

I have now submitted a bug report to the freedesktop.org bugzilla:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105526

Seeing as how the modesetting driver is an acceptable workaround and I have now escalated the problem upstream, I am marking the thread as [SOLVED].

Just chiming in to report that the bug was fixed in the latest version of xf86-video-ati and that everything is working fine on the radeon driver again.
