But, on the topic, I've always thought this kind of thing was pointless. I can do the same thing in Thunar, only my images don't fly around.

Or pretty much any GUI file manager made in the past few years. You should look into e17 if you want eye candy. There is also a file manager prototype for e17, although I can't remember it's name.

It's a proof of concept. The concept itself was interesting, and it was amusing. I was never talking about how it was useful.

It is only natural that people can and will give their opinions on any given subject (including this once particularly since the topic is within the volatile category of aesthetics), and that those same opinions may not directly apply to the intentions you had when offering the category for discussion. Yes, I wan't trying to imply that your posts were pointless, but merely that some of the ideas had already been taken into mainstream development. Check the apps listed in Gullible Jones' post as examples of useful eyecandy.

Ohh. and maybe you could check out the Java-based 3D desktop that Dusty was hacking on awhile back.

I'm interested in functionality. I guess everybody is sore when it comes to file management because of how crappy it has been for the past 20+ years. I understand it's a proof of concept, but I think it's a pointless proof of concept. I could make a proof of concept that if you put your computer in an infinite for loop and keep malloc()'ing, your computer will run out of RAM. Is it useful? Not to the slightest degree.

What I see here is a directory full of images flying around on your screen. What's even slightly cool about that? I can code something that does the exact same thing in an afternoon. All I can see in that video is textured quads flying around with mouse selection. Read a few NeHe tutorials and you can accomplish this same exact thing. I'm not trying to sound mean at all in this post; I'm just saying what I think.

I've always thought that the desktop metaphor was a dumb one. I can't imagine why anyone would want to simulate the mess of a real desk in their computer when the computer can do the organizing on its own. To me, messy piles and stacks are what computers let us *escape* from.

These are neat proofs of concept though. I'm just not sure they're actually good ideas.

I liked the eyecandy in the screenshots though - I'm sure there's something it can be used for...
