i3 fails to start (GDM freezes)

The screen freezes after I input credentials when I try to log in to i3 through GDM.

As gnome still works fine, this doesn't appear to be a GDM error.

It worked a few hours ago, but broke after I rebooted.

I haven't made any major changes to the i3 config file in the past 24 hours, but did update my system before I booted to a different OS.

Re: i3 fails to start (GDM freezes)

I have now tried to:

- roll back the config files to the day before the problem appeared
- roll back the config files to their defaults
- remove and reinstall i3

It still freezes at login. GNOME still works fine.

I have also attempted to launch from tty using startx, but that too freezes.

On the same day that i3 broke, I did update nvidia (390.25-15 -> 390.25-16). But if that was the problem I would expect to also get problems with GNOME, not just i3.

When I try to login after a fresh install, i3 does generate the default config file.

Re: i3 fails to start (GDM freezes)

Why guess if you can check?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit

You'll also get a usable xorg log by skipping GDM.

Sorry, missed that part in your update.
Can you please paste the xorg log from the (a) startx attempt?
